I began asking them to identify the problem and their potential solutions. After a week of doing this each began to have two or three potential solutions to the issue and by the second week of ‘tough love management training’ I refused to answer anything other than the toughest questions. My response every time was simply, “What do you want to do about…?” After listening to their potential solutions, we’d discuss the one they really wanted to apply and only then, would I add my two cents worth to enhance, validate or celebrate their good decision.
